Horsemanship Day Camp

Pony Kids Information...

campers
Pony Kids is a progressive horsemanship day camp program, from the first time rider, to the experienced competitive rider. We have two goals. Initially, our goal is to introduce the beginner to basic skills in riding and horse care, in a safe, supervised, nurturing environment with individualized attention. The program prepares the beginner and novice riders with a correct solid foundation, knowledge and confidence to improve their skills. For our experienced riders, our second goal is to produce well educated riders and horsemen, through a challenging program which requires not only riding experience, but also maturity, responsibility, organizational and problem solving skills, diligence, confidence, and the ability to work efficiently and effectively independently or with others. The process of becoming a rider and horseman is never ending. The serious rider is never bored. There is always more to learn about improving the performance of the horse, and how you as both the rider and caretaker of the horse, control and affect the horse's performance.

We emphasize safety, education, and fun in our Pony Kids program. Over half of our Pony Kids are return campers. Many Pony Kids participate each summer to enjoy camp, improve their skills and renew friendships.

Facilities
Established in 1967, Woodsong Farm is a year round equestrian facility offering riding instruction, boarding and training. Additionally there is a Tack Shop on site with horse and rider supplies. Several horse shows and two phase events are held on Woodsong's grounds. Woodsong riders also compete successfully throughout the Northeast.

Set in a pastoral setting, amenities we offer include a 100'x 200' outside riding arena with sprinkler system, multiple split rail paddocks, pasture, twenty two stall main barn, and a two horse Pony Land Barn designed especially for our camp program.

horse & camperPony Kids Activities
Pony Kids headquarters is located in front of the stable, overlooking our riding arena. Our day begins at 9:00am with everyone meeting for sign in and morning animal chore assignments. After morning chores, campers gather together for snack time. Following snack time, campers separate to participate in demonstrations, lectures, and "hands on" activities based on their level of experience. During the afternoon campers have lunch, riding lessons, arts & crafts, horse games and afternoon chores. We encourage interaction between all levels of campers, with our more experienced riders sharing their knowledge and love of horses with the more beginner riders.
Beginner and novice riders ride in half hour private lessons. Our more experienced riders ride in either small group or private lessons. Our camp day ends at 2pm with parents checking in with our counselors to pick up campers. On Thursday and Friday parents may observe lessons, and do a "barn tour" at the end of camp.

Horse Shows
For our frequent campers who are at the walk trot riding level or above, we offer the opportunity to participate in our horse shows. These competitions are open to outside exhibitors, they are not camp shows. Classes include:

  • Lead Line
  • Pre Beginners
  • Walk Trot
  • Short Stirrup
  • And higher levels.

Please let us know well in advance if you are interested in further information. Registration for shows is 2 weeks prior to show date. Proper attire is required. Our program is totally horse orientated, so it is important that your child has a genuine interest. For safety purposes, to participate in the program children must be able to follow directions, be physically able and fit, speak English, be well behaved, and be able to dress themselves unassisted. This program is not suitable for a child needing a therapeutic riding program, a child who requires an aid, or a child with discipline issues.
